Serving

If we truly believe that Jesus is King, then at the core of our identity in Christ, we are His servants.  Serving our King is part of the joy of being a Christian because Jesus told us that his “burden is light” and his “yoke is easy” and that by serving Him with our hands, we find rest for our souls (Matt 11:29)

As you consider serving Jesus by contributing your time and talent to build His church, remember two things:

  1. You are special – God created you that way!  God has equipped you with passions, talents, experiences and even spiritual gifting for the express purpose of furthering his kingdom, and for encouraging and building up other people in his body the church.  (1 Cor 12 / Rom 12)  As you consider how to serve, ask yourself “what has God created me to be and do that can help him on his mission of taking the love of Jesus to the world?”  Then pursue with joy the service that you can offer as an act of worship to the one who made you to do what only you can do.
  2. You are part of a family that needs you!  Just as your nuclear family needs you to do chores, run errands and contribute to the overall health of the household, your church family needs you in order function in a healthy way.  Most of the “family chores” that need to be done in the Redeemer family happen on weekends, though there are some things that happen throughout the week.  Here are some of the things that you can jump in to help with:
    • Set up & tear down (chairs, sound, staging, children’s rooms)
    • Hospitality (coffee, snacks)
    • Greeting & ushering
    • Worship arts (musicians, vocalists, sound, lights, media)
    • Children’s ministry (teachers, helpers, check-in volunteers)
    • Follow up (making phone calls, answering questions, sending correspondence)
    • Hosting a Missional Community in your home
    • Student Ministries (working Wednesday night events, leading small groups)
